Ángela Martínez Gómez, graduated from the Faculty of Sciences of the Environment and Biochemistry of Toledo, has obtained one of the four national grants offered by the Tatiana Pérez de Gúzman el Bueno Foundation. So, she will be able to carry out her doctorate about “The use of biochar obtained from the vine to control in agricultural systems the phytoparasitic nematodes pest as an environmentally and biologically sustainable alternative to the chemical and physical methods of control “.
Its objective is to work against a nematode that causes pests in such important crops as potatoes, carrots and corn, bringing with it “a lot of economic and productive losses”.
The researcher raises the biochar as an available solution. It is a compound that is produced from the pyrolysis of organic matter. This matter can be obtained from agriculture wastes or also wastes produced at home. In this case, they have decided to consider wastes from winegrowing and vineyards.
In the case that her hypothesis is correct, this young woman could have found a much more sustainable method to those that are used now, chemicals that can cause damage to the soil.
