Vine varieties resistant to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and mildew are currently in discussion. The need to minimise the use of phytosanitary treatments due to their environmental impact and their use restriction regulation, makes producers and researchers to focus on resistant varieties. Thus, in order to discuss the use of these varieties and the need to start genetic improvement programs to reach a more sustainable production, a conference has been hold by IRTA and the RedVitis research network.
A total of 40 experts from different universities and research centres met at the Vilafranca del Penedés Council to discuss the pros and cons of using these resistant varieties to tackle the effect of powdery mildew and mildew. In addition, the need to start related genetic improvement programs in the country has been analysed. This discussion is being promoted among all the stakeholders involved in order to compare their points of view.
This discussion helped to better understand how this kind of plant material can change at least some of the current winegrowing models.
